If you run an oil-sealed vacuum pump, the oil inside it is doing far more than lubricating moving parts. It forms the vacuum-tight film between the vanes and the cylinder wall, carries heat out of the compression stage, and flushes wear particles away from precision surfaces. Choose the wrong oil — or leave good oil in service too long — and your process will tell you: a creeping ultimate pressure, slower pumpdown, more mist at the exhaust, and vanes that wear out months ahead of schedule. What Vacuum Pump Oil Actually Does
In an oil-sealed rotary vane pump, the oil has four jobs at once. First, it seals: a thin oil film closes the clearances between the rotor, vanes, and stator, which is what allows the pump to reach its rated ultimate vacuum. Second, it lubricates the bearings and the vane slots. Third, it absorbs compression heat and moves it to the pump housing. Fourth, it captures condensable vapors and fine particles drawn in from the process and holds them until the oil is changed.

1. Viscosity grade
Most rotary vane vacuum pumps are designed around ISO VG 46, 68, or 100 oils, classified by kinematic viscosity at 40 °C. Oil that is too thin cannot maintain the sealing film; oil that is too thick makes cold starts difficult and increases power draw. Always follow the pump maker's recommendation, and adjust for ambient temperature if your installation runs hot or cold.
2. Low saturated vapor pressure
The oil itself must not outgas. A vacuum-grade oil with low saturated vapor pressure holds a deep ultimate vacuum and keeps pumpdown fast, even when the pump runs hot. This single property is the clearest dividing line between true vacuum pump oil and general-purpose lubricants.
3. Oxidation stability and anti-foam performance
Hot oil in contact with air oxidizes into sludge and varnish that clog vane slots and oil passages. Quality oils carry antioxidant and anti-foam additive packages so the oil film stays intact instead of collapsing into foam at the inlet.
4. Demulsibility (oil–water separation)
Vacuum pumps routinely ingest water vapor. A good oil releases that water so it can be drained from the reservoir rather than forming a stable emulsion. Once oil turns milky, its sealing and lubricating performance drops sharply.
5. Volatility and flash point
Lower-volatility base stocks mean less oil carried out of the exhaust as mist, longer intervals between top-ups, and a cleaner work area. A higher flash point adds a margin of safety in hot-running installations.
Mineral, Synthetic, or PFPE: Matching Oil Type to the Job
