When an oil-sealed rotary vane vacuum pump starts losing vacuum, running hotter than usual, or making unfamiliar noise, experienced technicians almost always check the oil first. There is a good reason for that habit. Inside this type of pump, oil is not simply a lubricant poured in to reduce friction — it is the working medium that makes deep vacuum possible in the first place. How an Oil-Sealed Rotary Vane Pump Works — in 30 Seconds

An eccentric rotor sits inside a cylindrical stator, with two or more vanes sliding in the rotor slots. As the rotor turns, the vanes are pressed against the stator wall, creating chambers that expand to draw gas in, then shrink to compress it and push it out through an exhaust valve. Oil circulates continuously through this chamber. Every gap between the vane tips, the rotor, and the stator wall is measured in hundredths of a millimeter — and it is the oil film that closes those gaps. Without oil, the pump is just a fan; with oil, it becomes a vacuum pump.

1. Sealing the pumping chamber. This is the primary job. A thin oil film fills the microscopic clearances between vanes, rotor, and stator, preventing compressed gas from leaking backward. 2. Lubricating moving parts. Vanes slide in and out of their rotor slots thousands of times per minute, and bearings carry the full rotational load. Choosing the Right Vacuum Pump Oil

Not every oil behaves the same way under vacuum. When selecting vacuum pump oil, three properties deserve attention:

Vapor pressure. A dedicated vacuum oil has a low vapor pressure, so it does not evaporate into the vacuum chamber and limit the achievable pressure. General-purpose machine oil is not a substitute.
Viscosity. The grade must match the pump design and the ambient temperature — thick enough to seal at operating temperature, thin enough to flow at start-up.
Chemistry. Mineral oils suit most general applications, while synthetic oils are preferred for high-temperature duty or chemically active processes.

Reading the Oil: Four Signals It Is Time for a Change

Oil condition is a surprisingly honest diagnostic tool. Watch for these signals:

Milky or cloudy oil — water vapor has condensed into the oil. Run the pump with the gas ballast open, and change the oil if the emulsion persists.
Dark, burnt-smelling oil — oxidation from sustained high temperature. The sealing film is degrading and the oil should be replaced promptly.
Dropping oil level — check for leaks, and inspect the exhaust. A clogged or saturated oil mist filter will push oil consumption up and release visible mist.
Rising ultimate pressure — when the pump no longer pulls down to its rated vacuum on a tight system, aged or contaminated oil is the most common culprit.
