Few machines work as quietly — or as hard — as the oil sealed rotary vane vacuum pump. It sits behind packaging lines, coating chambers, freeze dryers, and laboratory instruments, holding pressure steady shift after shift. How an Oil Sealed Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Works

A rotary vane pump is an oil-sealed mechanical vacuum pump. Inside the cylindrical chamber, a rotor is mounted off-center, so its outer circle runs almost tangent to the chamber wall. Two sliding vanes sit in slots cut into the rotor, pressed outward by springs and centrifugal force so their tips stay in constant contact with the chamber wall as the rotor turns.

That simple geometry produces a continuous three-phase pumping cycle:

  • Suction. As the rotor turns, the crescent-shaped space connected to the inlet expands. Pressure inside it falls below the pressure in the connected vessel, and gas is drawn in.
  • Compression. The trapped pocket of gas is carried around the chamber and steadily squeezed into a smaller volume.
  • Exhaust. Once the compressed gas exceeds exhaust pressure, it pushes the exhaust valve open, passes through the oil layer, and leaves the pump.

Pump oil does far more than lubricate here — it is part of the vacuum seal itself. Oil coats every moving surface in the chamber, closing the microscopic gaps between the suction and exhaust sides, and the exhaust valve sits submerged so outside air cannot leak back in. In pressure terms, these pumps cover the range from atmospheric pressure (101,325 Pa) down to roughly 1.33×10-2 Pa, which places them firmly in the low-to-medium vacuum class. They run perfectly well on their own, and they are equally common as backing pumps for Roots blowers or turbomolecular pumps.

Fitted with a gas ballast valve, the pump can also handle modest amounts of condensable vapor without contaminating the oil. The technology does have limits, though: it is not the right choice for gases with high oxygen content, vapors that corrode metal, gases that react with pump oil, or streams carrying abrasive dust.

Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage: Which One Do You Need?

A Single Stage Rotary Vane Pump performs all of its compression in one working chamber. The design is compact, light, mechanically simple, and inexpensive to buy and maintain. For general industrial duty — packaging, vacuum forming, degassing, holding fixtures — a single-stage unit is usually the economical answer.

A two-stage pump connects two single-stage chambers in series. Gas leaving the high-vacuum chamber feeds directly into the second chamber, which compresses it again before discharge. The payoff is a significantly deeper ultimate vacuum, steadier performance under heavier gas loads, and better resistance to oil backstreaming, because oil vapor on the exhaust side is continuously swept away by the front stage.
