Pumping speed at your working pressure. Ask for the speed curve, not just the free-air maximum. If your process holds 10 mbar, you need the speed at 10 mbar.
Ultimate vacuum, with and without gas ballast. A pump quoted without stating the gas ballast condition may miss its number in humid service.
Motor rating and electricals. Power in kW, voltage, phase, frequency (50 or 60 Hz), and confirmation the motor is rated for continuous duty, not intermittent service.
Noise level in dB(A). Matters more than buyers expect once the pump sits next to an operator station.
Oil capacity and recommended oil grade. Larger oil sumps run cooler and stretch service intervals.
Connection sizes, weight, and footprint. Inlet and exhaust threads must match your piping; the skid must fit your layout.

Design Details That Decide Reliability

Anti-suckback protection. A valve or oil circuit design that stops oil migrating back into your vacuum chamber when the pump stops or power fails. Without it, one outage can contaminate a chamber or a batch.
Gas ballast. Essential if the gas stream carries water vapor or other condensables. It purges vapors before they condense into the oil and turn it into mayonnaise.

Is Single Stage Enough, or Do You Need Two Stages?

A practical rule of thumb: if your process works comfortably in the rough vacuum band, a single stage pump is usually the economical answer. It is simpler, cheaper to buy, cheaper to rebuild, and tolerant of rough handling. Move to a two-stage model when you need a deeper end vacuum, a cleaner vacuum with less oil backstreaming, or stable operation close to the pump's limit. And if your real problem is speed at medium vacuum rather than ultimate pressure, pairing a single stage pump with a Roots blower as a backing set often beats oversizing the vane pump.

Match the Variant to the Environment

Standard cast iron construction suits clean, dry air. If your gas stream carries acidic or oxidizing vapors, ask about corrosion-resistant builds with stainless hardware and FKM sealing. For flammable or explosive atmospheres, specify an explosion proof vacuum pump with a rated motor and appropriate electricals from the outset; retrofitting protection later is expensive and often impossible to certify. Small workshops without three-phase power should check single-phase motor options early, because not every frame size is available in single phase.
