What Is a Roots Vacuum Pump?
A roots vacuum pump, also known as a Roots blower or mechanical booster, is a positive-displacement pump that uses a pair of figure-eight-shaped (8-shaped) rotors rotating in opposite directions at synchronized high speed within a precisely machined housing. Unlike oil-sealed pumps, the rotors do not contact each other or the pump casing, operating with extremely tight clearances measured in microns. This non-contact design means the pump requires no lubrication inside the pumping chamber, making it inherently oil-free in the gas path.
As the rotors spin, they trap gas between the rotor lobes and the casing wall, transporting it from the inlet to the exhaust without internal compression. Because the Roots pump cannot discharge against atmospheric pressure on its own (the pressure differential across the pump must be limited to prevent overheating), it always operates in series with a backing pump such as a rotary vane vacuum pump or a dry vacuum pump. This combination creates a complete vacuum pump system capable of achieving both high pumping speed and deep ultimate vacuum.
Four Reasons to Add a Roots Booster to Your System

Pairing Your Roots Pump with the Right Backing Pump
Selecting the correct backing pump is essential for reliable Roots booster operation. The two most common backing pump technologies InPowerVac recommends are:
1. Rotary Vane Vacuum Pumps (Oil-Sealed)
The rotary vane vacuum pump is the most economical and widely used backing pump for Roots boosters in general industrial applications. It handles high inlet pressures effectively and provides a reliable starting vacuum before the Roots pump engages. InPowerVac single-stage and two-stage rotary vane models offer pumping speeds from 4 to 1,200 m³/h with ultimate vacuum down to ≤20 Pa.
2. Dry Screw Vacuum Pumps (Oil-Free)
For clean, oil-free processes in semiconductor, lithium battery, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries, pair your Roots booster with a dry vacuum pump. InPowerVac dry screw pumps, including air-cooled, water-cooled, titanium-alloy chemical-resistant, and pharmaceutical-grade models, deliver completely oil-free compression from atmosphere to deep vacuum, ensuring zero process contamination.
Industries That Depend on Roots Vacuum Technology
Roots boosters serve as critical industrial vacuum pump components across a broad spectrum of sectors:
The InPowerVac Manufacturing Advantage
When you source a roots vacuum pump from InPowerVac (Zhejiang Yingpa Electromechanical Co., Ltd.), you partner with a manufacturer with roots in the vacuum industry dating back to the year 2000. Our founder entered the vacuum equipment sector with a clear mission: to close the technology gap between Chinese vacuum products and premium imported brands, delivering world-class quality at accessible prices.
Our two production bases in Zhejiang and Hebei provinces house 32 Mazak CNC processing centers dedicated to precision screw and rotor manufacturing, alongside dedicated workshops for oil-lubricated rotary vane production, intelligent assembly and packaging, industrial product assembly, comprehensive testing, and precision screw processing. Every pump undergoes rigorous inspection in our in-house laboratories, including material tensile testing, vacuum performance testing, dynamic balance verification, and 3-coordinate dimensional measurement.
This commitment to quality has earned the trust of world-class enterprises, including Foxconn, Huawei, Samsung (South Korea and Vietnam), Tata Group of India, Aoyama Group, and Russian National Energy. We use only imported bearings and oil seals in every pump, incorporate British oil mist filter technology for low-emission operation, and design anti-backflow oil protection into every oil-sealed unit.
Selecting the Right Roots Vacuum Pump
Choosing the correct Roots booster involves evaluating several key process parameters. Consider the following five factors before making your selection:
- Required Pumping Speed: Calculate your chamber volume and target pump-down time to determine the necessary booster displacement; Roots pumps typically provide 3-10x the backing pump speed.
- Operating Pressure Range: Confirm the pressure range where the booster will operate; ensure the differential pressure rating of your chosen model matches the compression ratio required.
- Gas Composition: For corrosive, condensable, or particulate-laden gases, select gas-circulation cooled or specialty coated models; titanium alloy construction is available for harsh chemical environments.
- Cooling Method: Choose air-cooled models for simplicity and low water usage, or water-cooled / gas-circulation cooled models for continuous high-load duty cycles.
- System Integration Needs: Consider whether you need a standalone booster or a fully engineered vacuum pump system including the backing pump, piping, controls, and instrumentation. InPowerVac provides fully customized vacuum solutions tailored to your process.
We also supply a full range of vacuum components and spare parts, including replacement vanes, vacuum pump oil, oil mist filters, dust filters, oil filter systems, and comprehensive rotary vane spare parts kits, ensuring long-term maintainability for every system we deliver.
