It is not the newest vacuum technology, and it is not trying to be. It is the design that plants rely on when they need dependable rough-to-medium vacuum, hour after hour, without a dedicated specialist standing next to it. This guide explains how the technology actually works, where a single stage design is the right answer (and where it is not), and what separates a pump that runs for a decade from one that gets rebuilt every year.

How a Single Stage Rotary Vane Pump Works

The mechanism is elegantly simple. Inside a cylindrical stator sits a rotor mounted off-center, with sliding vanes fitted into slots along its length. As the rotor turns, centrifugal force (assisted in some designs by springs) pushes the vanes outward so they ride against the stator wall. The space between two adjacent vanes expands at the inlet, drawing gas in, then shrinks as rotation continues, compressing the gas and pushing it out through an oil-sealed exhaust valve. One revolution, one complete pumping cycle.

In an oil-sealed machine, a carefully managed oil circuit does four jobs at once: it lubricates the moving contact line between vane and stator, seals the micro-gaps so compressed gas cannot leak back toward the inlet, fills the dead volume at the exhaust, and carries away the heat of compression.
