Difference between Rotary Vane Pump and Roots Pump

Both Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump and Roots Vacuum Pump are mainstream pumps in the market. The difference between the two is mainly reflected in product structure, performance characteristics and application fields.

Roots Vacuum Pump
Roots pump is a vacuum pump that moves gas and achieves vacuum by the pushing action of a pair of blade-shaped rotors rotating synchronously and counter-rotating in the pump chamber. Roots pump has no internal compression, so it cannot be used alone and needs to be equipped with a fore-stage pump.

Characteristics of Roots pump: fast start-up, low energy consumption, low operation and maintenance costs, high pumping speed, high efficiency, and insensitive to small amounts of water vapor and dust contained in the pumped gas.

Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump
Rotary Vane Pump: The eccentrically mounted rotor in the pump is tangent to the fixed surface of the stator, and two (or more) vanes slide in the rotor groove (usually radially) and contact the customized inner wall, dividing the pump chamber into several variable volumes. A rotary variable volume vacuum pump.

Characteristics of rotary vane pump: vacuum pump oil can be recycled, no oil smoke, clean, fuel-saving; can still maintain high pumping speed under low pressure; built-in filter element and filter, can achieve high filtering effect; built-in one-way valve to prevent vacuum oil backflow; good high temperature resistance.

The biggest difference between the two is that rotary vane pump can be used alone, Roots pump needs to be equipped with a front pump. In addition, there are also great differences in the application field. According to different working conditions, thin film evaporation, large space, single crystal silicon, freeze dryer, power electronics industry, nuclear energy industry, metal industry, blister, atomic energy and other industries can choose Roots pump or rotary vane pump; but in the field of vacuum packaging and vacuum glue filling, rotary vane pump is more widely used; in the field of machine tools and diesel engines, Roots pump is more commonly used.
